After noticing a "new" trend on Beta recently I was wondering... How do you guys feel about animated avatars and most of all, moving gifs in signatures?
I'm not one to talk since I have that rather large "in-your-face" personal art work of Ban (Get Backers) in my signature, but if it turns out that it annoys a lot of people I'll remove it.
I really would like some feedback on it, because I'd like to know what the overall thought about these images are.
Animated signature/avatars/etc don't bother me as long as they are well
done. Just don't go overboard with it and have half a page full of animated
gifs dancing around as your signature.
I'm much more against large images as they cause me effort (having to
scroll down more) than animated gifs and are much harder to ignore if you
don't like them. My feeling is that if your signature size is longer than your
average post, it's too big.
I don't mind large pictures in signatures and on the whole I don't mind the gifs if they are small. But some days I can't scroll down the pages with the animation messing with my machine. Sometimes I sit frozen staring at some thing until something catches up and I'm free to move again. I don't like being held hostage, especially by gifs.
I don't like them, but that's just me. I prefer very simple, clean designs.
There's one place I regularly check updates where there are so many dancing things that I get headaches. It's not just a function of aging eyes, although that certainly doesn't help, but the fact that I have to stare at a screen all day as it is.
Besides, something that's completely ADORABLE to see once or twice just turns into a nuisance after about the fifteenth run-through.
And I certainly agree with my buddy up above about wanting to limit scrolling due to large images.
All that said, I certainly wouldn't want to impose my taste or lack of same on anyone else!!
Compare that to small Huge Annoying Animated Sigs Rock.

Mmmmm....I love the Ban - Handsome hunk of flesh that he is!! I've had animated avatars in the past - I just try to keep them from being too flashy. At some point, I get distracted and can't focus on the text!

I don't really care. If they annoy you, you can turn them off in your profile. I like seeing the creative side of people. But I can see if you're still using dial-up that it could be annoying.
Well... I might be biased, but I adore my chibi dancing Gojyo. *coughs* Sorry Baakay, I'm keeping him for a while yet. ;-) Personally, I don't mind animated avatars at all, but big animated sigs annoy me, as they make scrolling through a page difficult. ^^;
I must be that annoying guy that everyone is thinking about. Have I gone a little overboard with the gifs? Maybe...... But I change things around quite a bit, so all the gifs may not stay very long. Plus, I don't post to terribly much to really annoy anybody yet.......At least I don't think?????

As a general rule, I am not too keen on animated ava's and signatures.
However I've noticed that I can't make out a general rule about the do's and dont's.
As long as it isn't too distracting, I can deal with it.
I've also noticed the distraction-factor of a sig or ava have a lot to do with the skin used.
