"Paypal" email scam!! Be very very careful

Post by Shampoo »

Hey guys! :o

Just wanted to warn you all, I got an email today from "paypal" saying that my account was logged in by a 3rd party because a foreign ip addy was detected and to please click on the bottom link and follow the directions.
Well it sounded fishy but the email was from "service@paypal.com"
..I clicked on it and brought me to the paypal homepage but I knew somethin was wrong and I wasnt about to login.

I clicked the source page and the html codes were all directing the loaded images to some site called repitilean.com and you couldnt right click on the supposed paypal site. So i immediately closed the window and deleted the e-mail. :P

So be careful guys!! Always double check before handing out passwords to these emails and clear your cookies, internet temp files, and history as often as you can! /no1

Interesting gossip: Shampoo said he clicked on it and brought you to the paypal homepage but you knew somethin was wrong. Perhaps I misunderstood. What were you?

Yeah I received 2 emails like that in the last 2 days. The reverse ip lookup of the page it linked to was run from a person with a dsl account in Austrailia. Wish there was a global anti-internet spam association that had the authority to punish phishers like this :?

I get emails like that all the time after i've used PayPal and/or ebay.

One of the things I do is open -all- the header information in my email, and take a look at that, also you can scroll over the link to see if it really is paypal or not... most of the time it will say something like http://www.thisiscrap.paypal.com/glalalajlkdsfja or whatever. I forward them to spoof@paypal.com or spoof@ebay.com hopefully someone there will be able to do something with them.

As they always say...never click on any links from an email...always go
through the paypal/ebay site. In fact, they just created a message center
on my ebay so that people will know that messages come from them.

In my experience . . . paypal/ebay doesn't give a crap about your account security. So they don't send you emails about how there might be a "security breach." So basically any email asking you to verify information or telling you that your account has been suspended because of a security issue is just phishing. I get them more often from ebay than paypal. :P

I first got one from ebay. I was a newbie to the whole buying online thing, because my parents are computer illiterate and so are terrified of that kind of thing. Anyway, it freaked me out when they said that my ebay account would be suspended in 48 hrs. if I didn't verify some information, because there was some "suspicious activity" on my account. My first thought was "But I have an auction I'm bidding on ending in three days!" :sweatdrop I clicked on the lick and it asked for my credit card info. Now, ebay only requires credit card info. if you are going to be selling, I wasn't at the time, so I was pissed. Luckily, I didn't put anything in.

The worst one I ever got? A security breach notification sent to the email account that is linked with paypal, not ebay (I have one email for paypal, one for ebay). :D Silly people.

Thank for the heads up, Marie.
It never hurts to remind (slow) people (like me) of these things.

Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?
