Anyone bought a house or other big thing lately?

Post by shellie »

Okay, I'm taking a bit of a break to ask y'all a quick question... Have any of you bought anything like a house or car or other big ticket item lately? (Some of you buy cels that might fit in this category! :D) We just submitted an offer on a new house... and I'm thrilled and terrified all at the same time. Is that kind of normal? (I know I'm never really normal, but I was just curious! ;)) It would be thrilling to have this new house because it is really beautiful... but it is waaaay out in the country and I've never lived out that far before. It's in a decent school district.... but it's a different school district than the boys are currently in. My emotions have been all over the board in the last few days. Now the BIG downer is that I have to get MY house in shape to put it on the market!! 8O AAAAAA!! I haven't been online quite as much in the last few days because I've been stripping the kitchen floors, packing away extra clutter, etc. and there is sooo much more to do. But first they have to accept our offer, so all this may be a moot point! *sigh* Emotions up... emotions down! heehee! Am I just losin' it? Have the rest of you guys made big decisions like this and just breezed through it??

Suppose it does.

I'm paying off my house right now. So far we've bought a car, bought a house and refinanced the afore-mentioned house. Nope it's never a breeze, but the thrill keeps ya going :D

We have moved both my business partners this year, one into a ranchette (5 acres) and the other into a 6000 SF house (His wife is a lawyer) so I know just how shook up things get. Just be sure that everything is what you really want and then don't sweat it, you can always move again if you don't like it 8O (ducks and runs for cover)

Yep, bought a house. First house for me. What was so scary about it is that 1. it's exactly what I wanted in terms of house/neighborhood/location/street 2. it was on the market for six days when we made the first offer 3. someone else had offered and been denied. 8O

Our first offer was denied, as a matter of fact, but the sellers told us their exact terms (they could - two offers in six days! how abnormal is that?) and we met them.

Up. WE GOT IT! Down. OMG, I hate moving. Up. We're getting out of the apartment! Down. What if they won't fix the furnace and we have to do this all over again? Up. I can have an office and a guest room! Down. Mortgage is doubling rent. Up. Down. I'm currently in Up: I can finally throw some stuff away because I don't want to move it. :P

So yes, I'm there! We close Sept. 15th. :)

Congrats, DW!! And I'm glad it's not just me. I'm on the same rollercoaster. The house has only been on the market a week, and we are the first offerers. We are inching up and they are inching down. We'll see if we meet in the middle! :) We have a definite "won't go higher than" number, so if they want more than that, I know it's not meant to be and we'll just move on to something else.

:D heehee! Actually, davui, that is exactly how I feel! I think the hubby and I have a bit of gypsy in our souls because we moved 4x the first 5 years we lived in this town... any time we found somewhere we liked better, we moved! But that was always renting... and that was before kids. And that was before we had more than one small truckload of belongings to move! :D heehee.

I guess I should just take a deep breath and roll with it. Now if you'll excuse me, I have more baseboards to wash and touch-up painting to do and metric tons of clutter to box up before I can show this house to any prospective buyer. :wow: (THAT is really what's making my blood pressure rise!)

I just bought my mom a condo. Its really SUPER depressing buying in California because its a 1 bedroom 675 sq ft condo for $250,000. ARGH!!! The only good thing about the inflated realestate market is our house has gone up that much in value in the last 2 years.
It is pretty scary at first making the financial commitment, you feel like your signing your life away with all the paper work, but the funny thing is that in 6 months or so you get used to working the payments into your budget and you don't even notice.

Congratts!!!! Its wonderfull knowing the monthly payments are going to something you own and not the black hole of renting and there's nothing like the pride of ownership!!!

I bought my house about six and a half years ago and it's a decision that I
haven't regretted. So much better to have a permanent place of your own
and not have to deal with people above or below you, renting being jacked
up, etc. The downsize is that if anything goes wrong, you have to fix it.

But, in the long term, it's better financially. If I had been renting, I would
paid out about the same amount of money as I have on my house, but I
would have nothing to show for it. With the housing boom, I could sell my
house today, pay off the mortgage and not only have the money I've put
into it since I've had it, but pull a profit over that as well.

I sure understand, I sold the house in Florida a while back and am ready to start a new one here, but must wait a while to get the businesses evened out. Fortunately I already have the next lot tied up :D 1/2 acre on a 17 acre pond with big trees and a place for a dock :D

Sounds wonderful, Davui! Know any good architects to build somethin' for ya?? ;)

And you all are so right about renting vs. buying. This will be the 3rd house we've purchased (IF they accept our offer!), but it still doesn't get any easier. I think the biggest deal (other than all this hideous cleaning and uncluttering to get my house showable! :wow:) is if I'm going to love living way out in the country. I think I am. This house has 11 acres of really beautiful rolling forest with a little stream running through it. But I grew up in a Chicago suburb, and my current house is exactly one mile from WalMart and 3 miles from the mall,... and the new house is many miles from anything even remotely resembling a town or a store! But I think I'll really like it that way. I think! 8O
