Hurricane Katrina

Post by duotrouble »

I'm a little surprised that there isn't already a thread about Katrina. Although I'm guessing we're all tired or used to the hurricanes by now. I just know we have lots of beta members in the affected areas and wanted to make sure everyone is safe and sound. Katrina is/was one monster of a hurricane.

My brother lives on the Florida panhandle. He got lucky this time but is a little flooded. My parents and I live in Alabama and Georgia respectively and have been dealing with tornadoes and thunderstorms all day.

How about everyone else? Any Katrina stories you want to share? Or anyone just want to give shout outs that they're okay?

I also wanted to drop-in and say that I hope everyone's okay. :)

Looks like we'll have to deal with it way up here in Ohio very soon. They're calling for 2"-5" of rain O_O This on-top the fact that it's been raining for several days already. They've already issued flood watched for our area and the storm isn't expected until Wednesday. lol We needed rain. . but dang!

It's kind of been addressed in two other threads :P
( http://www.anime-beta.com/phpBB/viewtop ... highlight= and http://www.anime-beta.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=14627) I really don't think there were many members down there and, lets face it, after the tsunami and poor Florida we're all a little blase about natural disasters.

I'll be sure to post pictures once I get back to New Orleans and check everything out. If they're letting people back in the city, I'm planning a trip back this weekend to see if my house is still standing and to salvage what I can if it isn't. It'll probably be a few weeks before I can go back to stay, though.

I told Echo, it's pretty bad when you evacuate with only one pair of shoes but with books and boxes of cels and sketches! :rollin I really hope that I can save at least some of what I left behind. :l

It was the thread the evil one wrote regarding you that prompted me to start this one.

I know there are more members than you think especially since I wasn't talking about just the coastline. Poor kisara and shellie are in for some fun times in the rain tomorrow. I'm really glad to hear you made it to safety and hope all is well when you get home. I'm grateful I have power because many people in my area don't.

I think it's funny what my first reaction was when I heard about Katrina. I asked, "Wait a minute! Weren't we just on D? What happened to the other letters?" :)

Hurricanes have always fascinated me. I've lived through many of them so you'd think I'd be bored with them but I'm not. The one I remember most is Hurricane David in 1979. I think that was the first time I ever saw massive flooding. 8O

Thanks for the nice thoughts, Duo! :) You're right, we are in for some flooding here too. Kis lives farther south than I do, and we are expected to get 8" of rain today and tomorrow. And since 2 rivers intersect our town, we are flood city. (We are home to the "world famous" Y-Bridge ... you can actually go to the middle of hte bridge and turn left. :)) Last year during all the Florida hurricanes, we had quite a lot of flooding... lots of photos of rooftops and floating cars here. blech. So we don't get the sudden horrors of the hurricane, but we certainly get the slow painful damage that comes after.

:rollin :rollin :rollin The last one I remember is Emily! What happened to F,G,H,I, and J?

Well, another levy broke, so it looks increasingly more likely that I've lost everything that I didn't take with me. The mayor said that about 80% of New Orleans is under water now and the CNN people are describing it as a "big black hole". :l

What a MONSTER this storm was!!! 8O I've got friends in Birmingham that are losing power because of it! Not to mention the tornadoes. What a crazy mess. :? Shellie - since your area is prone to flooding, do you have an axe in the attic, just in case? I know a lot of people in NOLA were saved because they remembered to keep one up there.

You guys in the east are going to be getting most of the tornadoes it looks like, so batten down the hatches and stay safe!!!

I was thinking of you guys when I saw the news reports last week, I sincerely hope that everyon'e swell prepared and that no-one goes through any disaster. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you all.
If it's any consolation, we're having brilliant sunshine here in SE England and the temps are around 26 Degrees C. Hope that makes you feel better :P :D

No, no axes in the attic. But I'm far enough from the rivers and streams here that I'm not worried about the water being that high. I'll get everything up off the basement floor, but other than that I'm sure I'll be fine. My last house was on the river about 8 miles downstream from the dam. That house was always high and dry during all the flooding, but last year during the hurricane related floods, they did fear that that dam might not be able to hold.... in which case my little house would have been seen floating underneath that Y shaped bridge a few miles downstream! :D

I hope you are able to get back home in the next couple of weeks, Lynxa. I think the worst part would be waiting and not knowing what the damage was. Keep us updated and we'll keep you in our thoughts and prayers!!

Where abouts are you, Shellie?

I keep thinking about what a total MESS it was in 1993 when we had the unabated thunderstorm activity in the upper midwest for a month or so. That was the summer we moved out here to bone-dry Colorado, and there was like ONE bridge open across the Mississippi for a 300 mile stretch. And the water was lapping right up to the bottom of the deck. Ewww.

As nasty as the immediate flooding is likely to be, that's what scares me even more for New Orleans and the parishes. All that water goes south... and into that delta. Man.

*hugs Lynxa*. You seem to be holding up well, lady. I'm pretty darnded impressed.

If Cali "drops" off, wouldn't Arizona technically have fjords instead of beaches ?

Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?
