I read viewers comments while they were watching the anime.

The general consensus seems to be that the anime was made for fans of the game(s). I only skimmed the anime a bit, but the viewer response was that the anime felt confusing and convoluted to those that were not familiar with the game(s). The people that knew the game(s) liked the anime a lot more than those that didn't know anything about the game(s).

EDIT:

The rating for it on MyAnimeList is only 6.40 - which means that a lot of people that started to watch the anime didn't like it. That's a very low rating for a recent anime series.
