trying to update an old mac

Post by Belldandy16 »

Any Mac techies in here?
ok, i got this old mac ibook for free and i want to give it to this little girl down the street who is very poor and cant afford a computer.
well its an old piece of shizzle ... as my friend puts it :rollin ... its a OS 10.2.8 256MB 500MHZ Powerpc G3

i tried installing old software to try to get it so it will at least be able to view most sites on the net (where most teens frequent.. youtube, myspace, facebook) but nothing works. >_<
what im thinking of doing is installing a newer version OS on this thing. I have Mac 10.4
does anyone know if its possible to install a newer OS on an old hardware?

i asked someone else a long time ago but they said its not possible (but idont know how much knowledge he had so i thought id ask around in here and see if anyone knows (or could put me in touch with someone who knows) if its possible.
Thanks guys!
appreciate it! :)

An iBook G3 model can run up to OS 10.4. If you are going to try to install 10.4, you have to have a universal OS disk (i.e., the retail version sold independent of the computer). The disks that come with a given Mac computer are specific to that type of computer.

A great place to get technical help is from the Apple support forum at
http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa.

Just sign up and ask away!

how can you tell if its a universal disk?
i inherited the software and dont know if he bought it with his computer or if he bought it separate (and of course id ask him if i could but he passed away).
.
i can take a picture of it and post it here tomorrow if that would help.

thank you again! :)

Go to this thread:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jsp ... 5&tstart=0

It shows pictures of the universal disks and described the computer type-specific disks.

oh hey , Benten, just one more question buddy! :D

ok so i got in the closet today and low and behold i found two black disks, 10.4 and 10.5!

do you think i can put 10.5 on the laptop and it will work... or will it just be able to take 10.4?
