Anime Japanese words

Since ive watched Naruto in japanese i learned some new words in japanese so lets each post 1 or 2 words and their meanings and this could improve our japanese vocabulary Also if you want, post how you should pronounce it.

Arigato (ar-e-gah-toh) = Thank you
You all probably knew that but lets hear some more!!!

Oh, gosh, I've learned all kinds of funny stuff from this one drama... Long Love Letter with Kubozuke Yousuke. ^^;; It's my all-time favorite drama...and I'm so excited because I finally got another friend to watch it... so now I have some one else to talk and sigh over it with. ^^;

Anyway, here's one sample of the things I've learned from it...and I think you'll get a kick out of it.

Shiteiai (師弟愛) = teacher/student love

Since I watch a lot of shounen bishoujo anime I learned these words. They pop up all the time in them:

hentai = a pervert or to be perverted
imouto (ee-moh-toh) = younger sister
kokuhaku = confession
osananajimi = childhood friend

So you can see where my mind is at.

Not exactly a word, but a short phrase I learned this week:
馬鹿も一芸
baka mo ichigei
Even a fool has one talent.

The one you really hope you won't hear after you've just offered up the worst-case scenario in a really bad situation:

"Sonotori" (so-no-to-ree)

Which means "exactly" or "Precisely"

Or... "bingo, loser... now you die."

Ah jeez, I've picked up a CRAPLOAD of useless Japanese that will hardly ever be useful (hopefully )

Sore wa himitsu desu = That's a secret (Thanks Xellos! )

Mitsketa = found you

tasketei = save me

daijobu = "ca va" (you okay?/I'm okay)

Ah hell, between anime and the "Japanese for beginners" CD roms I'm full of useless Japanese!!!! (Actually, some of my japanese speaking friends will listen to the roms and pee their pants laughing at some of the phrases )

my personal favorites, though sorta basic, are:

Nani!? -What?!

Ohayo!- Good Morning!

I'll post some you might have heard, and some you might not be familiar with.

watashi=I, me, my (watashi no)--used for men and women, formal conversation

boku=I, me, my (boku no)--boys only!!, slightly less formal, but still acceptable in polite speech

atashi=I, me, my (atashi no)--girls only!! same formality as boku

ore=I, me, my (you get the idea )--boys only!!!, very informal, use around close friends only

genki=health--but Japanese don't ask about your health as a greeting; they talk about the weather

Genki desu, ne=Take care of yourself (as far as health goes)--literally, Be good health, right?

tenki=weather

Oro? - Kenshin
Nani?! - just about every anime out there!
Furinkankokoa! - (Furinkan High School - where Ranma and Akane go to school)

This is the word that my friend loves to use at work all the time when he's joking around. He's says it in a way that sounds like he's about ready to start crying.

So... having gotten that out of my system Here are some of the terms commonly used around the house here.

Yosha! (or maybe it's really a u at the end? often isn't pronounced). Means "allllrighty then!"

Osuwari! ("Sit") is really useful when you have two girls whose idea of sitting at the dining table involves limbs draped in several inelegant and potentially dangerous ways over the chairs and table.

URUSEI! I have heard variously translated as "shut UP", "you are annoying" or "you are too noisy", all of which can apply at any given time here.

Baka neko ("Stupid CAT(S)!") gets used a lot in a house with 3 old cats who have various digestive issues.

Hiaku, Hiaku!! I use on them a lot when trying to get them out the door into the van to go to school. Means hurry, hurry.

of course Itatakimasu means, here, "rub-a-dub-dub, thanks for the grub" which is as close as we ever get to saying grace before a meal. It's much more elegant in Japanese.

And we also have several completely made-up variations on Kage Bunshin no Jitsu (Naruto's trademark skill) and Hiten Mitsurugi Ryu [insert appropriately foolish attack here]

Oooh! EDIT: forgot the one we actually use the most: "Genki" -- meaning well, healthy, energetic, etc. Of course we use it incorrectly, on purpose... "Man, EJ, you're full of genki today! what got into you?"
