What a day!!

Post by Baakay »

Wow.

Ok, it started out like a normal day, with the cat waking me up at 5:15 sharp in spite of the fact that there was no earthly need for me to get up at such an ungodly hour. Nevertheless, that's pretty much ops normal for this place. Up I got, and came downtstairs to start the daily crawl.

About an hour later the younger Thing (you know, Thing 1 and Thing 2?) came rushing downstairs to say "The fish had babies!!" And sure enough... where there were five fish yesterday, there are now five adults and FOURTEEN BABIES!! :jaw I knew they were live bearers but holy fish fry, Batman!

Alright, so it's a normal day aside from suddenly needing a much larger tank. :puzzled

Just after dinner, Thing 1 insisted on going out for a bike ride. Given our placement in town and the fact that neither of them has the world's best balance, we still go with them whenever they go riding. So Nate and EJ headed out the door to do that.

Five minutes later there is a huge caterwauling and in comes the pair, EJ bleeding from both knees, scraped on both arms, and... with a nice big chip out of one front tooth :OMG So we've spent the past 2 hours kind of vibrating in place, waiting to see whether she needed to be rushed to the dentist or the emergency room (she was screaming about her arm...but being prone to grand flights of dramatic frenzy like her mom, it seems that what she has is a stretched ligament. Painful, but not broken).

Dentist says "oh darn... but I see 50 of those a year. She'll be fine." I'm sure she will, but I don't know about ME... that was the worst moment or two since the emergency run to the hospital with a life-threatening asthma attack a few years back. I'm sure there are at least five or six new gray hairs.

Then we're watching the imminent arrival of katrina... Holy smokes guys... I hope you're all safe down there. This is very, very scary. Lynxa, or anyone else down at that end of the world, please let us know that you're ok as soon as you can.

Luckily for you the big fish will probably eat a good deal of the babies before you need a bigger tank! :rollin

Your daughter sounds a lot like my little sister! She had a lot of grand accidents like that in her younger (and not so younger) days :P I hope she feels better!

I got the hell out of Dodge this morning at 5:45 AM and, thanks to the contraflow plan, made it to Little Rock in just over ten hours (usually takes 7 1/2, but during Ivan I had friends take 13 hours to get to Baton Rouge, 75 miles away). So I, my puppy, my guinea pig, and my fish are all safe and dry. I'm trying not to watch the hurricane coverage ever since I heard the words "chemical cesspool" used to describe what New Orleans could become. :O This is the most powerful hurricane to ever hit the US and the lowest pressure front ever recorded. They are invoking the name of Camille (and for those of you who don't know, they talk about Camille in Louisiana the way they talk about WW II in Europe X| ).

I packed quickly and left a lot of stuff behind. If what they say is going to happen happens, I could be looking at the loss of almost everything I own. Not to mention how in the hell I would finish my degree if the school gets wiped out!!!! 8O

.....So I'm trying not to think about it. :bawl

1) Hope the fish aren't really DRY... :puzzled

2) Geez... has it dropped AGAIN??!! Last time I looked it was still 3 hurricanes behind Gilbert for low pressure... that was an amazing moment... I remember hearing about Camille (as well as the Labor Day 1935 storm) from parents and grandparents who were along for the ride when I was growing up. The largest one I've ever been in was the tail end of one in about 1987... it came up through New England, scared the willies out of everyone and left us without power for about a week. But this....

The scariest thing to me is thinking about all those gorgeous places in New Orleans that are BELOW sea level and between the lake and the river. Lordy.

I'm REALLY thrilled that you're out of there and that you took time to let us know. We're keeping all digits crossed that this one decides to weaken overnight... but I'm not expecting much. Just be safe.

Glad you're safe and all the pets!
(How about all the cels?)

Wow, exciting days for y'all!

And Baakay, I've had grey hair coming in since I was fourteen. One of my friends pointed it out. I just told them it was their fault for giving it to me. X| :P
Of course, one advantage of being tall: not many people get to see my grey hair. :P

*giggle* Mine's kinda hard to miss at this point. I'm guessing I'm about 50-50 now. The advantage, I suppose, is that I used to be something between light brown and redhead. For some reason, just before these all start turning stark white, they turn stark black!! So I'm the epitome of "salt and pepper" you've heard of... :-)

Never a truer word was spoken, Cloud! ;)

You have had yourself quite the marvelous day, Kay!! :wow: Bunches of tiny new fish are fun to watch! (But I agree with Lynxa that many of them will probably mysteriously disappear. And funny thing, the big fish won't seem to be eating so much of the fishyfood flakes for a few days! X| )

And then your own baby getting all scraped up and chipping a tooth!! :O I hate those kind of days! Mom alway feels the pain worst when her kiddos get hurt. I'm glad everything seems to be okay there. (And there are even ways of taking care of those grey hairs you got from the experience too! ;))

On the hurricane side-note, I didn't realize you were from Nawlins, Lynxa... and I'm SO glad you got out! It's looking scarier and scarier down there. Keep us posted on how you and all your stuff are doing, okay! Are there any other Betarians in the New Orleans area?

I guess this logic depends on what type of fish it is... but if they are guppies, I don't think overcrowding would be much of a problem... X|
Oh, the fishy cannibalism. :x

Hope "Thing #1" is feeling better! But you know, falling off is an absolutely necessary part of learning how to ride a bike. :roll Can't be helped...

Aaw poor thing. As someone who knows from experience what an "unforseen exit off a bike" feels like, it has my fullest sympathy.
The pain is one thing, but it's the "shock" that feels the worst. Bad bike !

The Doctor : … and then, just to finish off, I’m going to wipe every last stinking Dalek out of the sky !
Dalek : But you have no weapons ! No defenses ! No plan !
The Doctor : Yeah ! And doesn’t that scare you to death ?
