Anyone bought a house or other big thing lately?

Why? Do you know the smallest deal other than all this hideous cleaning and uncluttering to get his or her house showable?

But, yeah, I know exactly how you feel --- exciting and scary all at the same time. I remember when we offered on our house. It's the first home we have ever owned, and we totally had sticker shock when we started looking for something to buy. The prices in Texas (where we came from) are so, so much lower than the prices in Virginia (where we ended up). So, for about a month, we walked around looking like this --->

I was so scared when we made an offer on our house, and it was accepted. Excited because we got the house we wanted, but terrified at the amount of money we were spending.

Recently, the only really "big" purchase we've made is replacing the carpet on the second floor. We put in wood flooring, and it's so nice. It was kind of expensive, but not so horrible because my dad installed it for us. So, a sort of "big" purchase, but not nearly as much as a house or a car.

Congrats again on the new house!!

First you get cold feet thinking about the money and then you get cold feet thinking about all the things that might conceivably be wrong with the house...

You are normal. Very normal.

ESPECIALLY with respect to the "OMG now I have to clean my existing home REALLY well" thing. I keep looking at the bumps and dings that we don't even notice in daily life but that we really would want to spruce up before putting this place on the market... and groaning. I'd love to get to where the bulk of the living space is above grade. Not bloody likely.

On the other hand, since we started with a really beat-up little ranch 20 years ago and doubled our money by investing huge amounts of elbow grease, we've been able to keep payments here very very low. We only mortgaged about half the value of the house.

I hope your move is to something excellent!!

Look on the bright side, at least you get a basement, we don't build them here in Dallas

I understand no basements in Florida and swampy places, but why are there no basements in Dallas, Davui?

And thanks, texxi and baakay, for letting me know that I'm not just losin' it.

Right now I guess we're in a holding pattern. We made our last counter-offer 2 days ago and we haven't heard anything. So we may be done. We've found out that the couple who own the house are selling it because they are getting divorced... since they just finished building the house last year, the woman doesn't want to leave but she can't afford to keep it by herself. Such a bummer. I feel really sorry for their whole circumstance. And I'm sure it will make the whole sale/transaction much more difficult too since they don't want to talk to each other. Not good.

But in the meantime, I've been slaving like a dog getting my house in shape in case it is going to be on the market in a short time... and I just may not want to leave this house now that it looks so nice!

(But I'm glad to plop down here in front of my computer to take a break for a minute! *whew!* I'm beat!!)

We have really expansive soil here, so the pressure on basement walls is extreme. (9" of movement from wet to dry is common.) The other thing is that the frost line here is only down 16", so we don't NEED to dig down there anyway

Ya learn somethin' new everyday! Didn't know that about Dallas, Davui! Thanks for the info. I like my basement... Don't know what I'd do without one. Guess we can chalk up one good thing about Ohio.

1) you get basements;
2) my Dad lives there;
