Have you ever been "burned" on Yahoo Japan?

Post by profatomo »

Hi Folks!

In many ways, access to Yahoo Japan through online deputy services have been a godsend for a poor, lowly cel collector like me. As much as I enjoy my early days of buying from American cel dealers, most of the great selection and great deals are on YJ. For most auctions, I've scored some terrific deals and some fantastic cels. I've managed to find other things I'd never thought I'd find, like a rare shikishi, a out of print art book or a cool robot toy. However, for every 10-15 items I've won, I've also been burnt by some shady japanese sellers with fake, counterfeit goods or by a misrepresented listing. Some of the items I've been burned are:

1. A fake BGC hanken cel
2. A King Kong vs. Godzilla movie poster that turned out to be a repro.
3. Some Dirty Pair pencil sketches that turned out to be Xerox copies
4. A fake Tezuka Astro Boy sketch and autograph

ALthough I've experienced the "bite" of some bum auctions without opportunity of recourse (like on Ebay), the good far outweighs the bad. So here's a question for you: have you been ever burned on YJ, and if so, which type of items have you been burned on? What is the costliest burn you've experienced? What sellers do you avoid? As they say, misery loves company, so please share with us your hard luck stories! :crossbones

I only recall two YJ auctions going wrong in six years and nine months. The two auctions were both when the sellers supposedly misplaced the items they had up for auction.

The first item the seller said was lost was an inexpensive Doukyuusei 2 episode nine tape back in September 2003. That wasn't a big deal because it was easy to find another tape (although not for as cheap).

The second auction I had items lost on was for a Tenkousei anime three-cel set. That wasn't such a big deal either because I had also won three other Tenkousei three-cel sets from the same seller on the same day (Sept 2004) and many of the cels in all four sets were from the same two cel sequences.

So fortunately I've been lucky.

My only bad experience with YJ involved a cel that turned out to be a nice fan cel but was not advertised as such.

I have had worse problems with Mandy.

Only once, when the seller simply never sent the item I won, which was a hard to find Sotsugyo M video (not OVA) video cel. No claiming it was lost or misplaced -- just no communication post-auction whatsoever.

Oh, heck, I learned the hard way that sellers list copies as "ORIGINAL autograph copy art". It's like, why even say original? :P

Most recently I bought a cel of Usagi that was listed as a real cel, and Rinkya emailed me and said it was a fan cel, but the description said nothing about it being fake. The situation is currently being reviewed -_-'.

Let's see. Oh! I bought some Galaxy Angel sketches that turned out to be Xerox copies. Not even like. "FULL SIZED" copies. The person crammed 10+ sketches (shrunk sized) onto one small sheet of paper. >_<"

But, yeah, the good outweighs the bad. :)

the worst expeience with Y!Japan I've had so far was damange to a cel that wasn't stated, but i was so happy to just -have- the cel I didn't care....

most recently I was annoyed as all get out to have an auction bid up almost 5000Y by a buyer with nothing but negative feedback, bumped the price right up to my absolute max i could afford for the cel... that drives me nuts, with their history they probably wouldn't have paid to begin with.... but I'm stuck paying what they 'say' they would have so to speak. I guess that can be the same with all auctions sites though. =\

I bought a cheap cel from a seller who ended up losing it. He did eventually send a sequence mate but it took a while.

The only close call I've had since buying from YJ these past two years was a background lot that never showed up to my deputy service and almost a month and half later the seller tried to resell it on YJ. My deputy took care of the situation and eventually got the backgrounds with the sellers excuse being that they forgot the lot had been previously sold. :|

Since you all already speak of fraudulent deals on YJ can I have all those ID's from the Sellers including what they marked wrong?
I work currently on a YJ Seller Blacklist so I'm wondering.
Any tips actual or past ones are welcome.

You can also pm me the IDs if you like that better.

Thank you. :)

My big burn was two model kits I purchsed on yahoo japan for an xmas present-seller took the money and never sent the goods. A month after the transaction, the seller had a mountain of bad feedback from people they'd scammed at the same time as me. Though the kits weren't expensive, it still irritates me to be taken like that.

Other then that, I've been pretty fortunate.

The most upsetting for me was while I was living in Japan. I had bid on one of the Hana to Yume special compilation magazines of Hamidashikko from the 1970s (I have two of the 4 already, and wanted to try to get the set). There was no reserve, and I was excited to win even if it was about 3200 yen for the magazine. So I wrote to the seller the day I won, giving my address and requesting a total plus shipping and the account number to transfer the money. No response. I wrote again a day later. No response. I wrote again a few days later. No response. After a couple of weeks of being ignoring me, the seller put the book back up for auction again. :( I don't know if he wasn't happy with the price (which I thought was actually a little high - that was the minimum bid) or if he just didn't want to sell to a foreigner. I pretty much gave up on getting those books after that.

One seller I trusted lost an item. They did not keep the money, so I did not have to pay anything. I still buy from them occasionally, because they put up a lot of sketches from shows that interest me, but the incident caused me to be much more wary when I consider bidding on their items.

I've had "damage that wasn't mentioned"...but it was relatively minor (bend in the clear acetate part). Perhaps the seller felt they covered it with the standard "used item" description. I think it bothered me more because it was one of my final cel purchases (not a cheap one either!) while my boat was sailing into sketch only territory. Much worse wear on some of my sketches hardly bothers me at all, probably because my sketches are almost always part of a set of dozens.

I've never been burned by fakes (far as I know) or copies instead of originals. Production artwork can be hard/impossible to authenticate in general, so I try to stick to sellers who've been around for a while and are known for putting out production artwork. Either way, I always examine the auction as closely as possible, the description as well as the picture.

I've heard one thing to watch out for are those PVC figure "pre-orders". Some of them might be genuine, but some definitely aren't. If you want to pre-order figures, it's better to stick to reputable companies like HobbyLink Japan. They don't take your money until the item comes in stock, and no deputy fees, either!
