Some people haven't even seen that many Animated movies and vote for what they have seen.

That's why this list is the way it is. They can't vote for a movie they haven't seen.

So Shrek and Toystory wins by default since more people have seen it!

Nothing surprised me anymore with "top" lists. You're never going to get everyone to agree so there is always going to be someone "complaining" that the list sucks. I didn't like half the movies on the list such as Fantasia. However, would I put Fantasia on my list? Yes! Why? Because at the time it was a remarkable piece of work. Now, it's just dated and quite boring even when you're drunk.

Would I put Shrek on my list? No! Why? I thought it was a piece of crap that didn't advance the industry in any way.

Would I add Akira? No! Why? I can easily think of 25 other animated movies that advanced the industry more than Akira did.

See, how many people are disagreeing with me? We all have different opinions. I look at "top" lists as someone's list about whatever to get people talking to each other.

Look at the "top 10 movies of all time" list someday. What a bogus list that is! Sure, we're always going to get record breaking movies hitting the box offices because they're basing it all on price. Guess what?! Movies are getting more and more expensive to go see. Base it on tickets sales and now we're talking real numbers.

<--off my soapbox :^^:

Here is a "recently remade" top list of animated movies.

I can't believe that the Simpsons movie got a 10 place boost!

Kung Fu Panda #2...really? I say we all put out our own top ten lists and see just how we would rank animated films. Pick your top ten, and then briefly explain why you chose each film.

I'm a little surprised you haven't had any bites yet.... I guess I'll be the first to offer up a list.

1) Sleeping Beauty: Pretty much the movie that started it all, and would probably be on the list, even without the historical significance.

2) Beauty and the Beast: Best Disney film since the very early days, and advanced animation technology.

3) Spirited Away: Actually not my absolute favorite Ghibli film, but probably the most flawless..... don't get me wrong though, it is WAY up on list of Ghibli favorites. It probably also had the best cross-over success of all the movies, though Mononoke was a little more pioneering in that regard.

4) Grave of the Fireflies: Okay, I know most people are only listing happy movies, but this movie is one of the best, and is consistently listed by critics as one of the greatest films made.

5) Tonari No Totoro: Though not as big a hit in the US, anyone who doubts the success of this movie in the rest of the world just needs to travel a little. Also probably the most creative of any movies you will find on these lists, and appeals to all ages.

6) Kiki's Delivery Service: Okay, maybe I'm the only one who thinks this, but it is one of my absolute favorites, and I can't think of another film that has the same quality of animation and backgrounds combined. The soundtrack is also very strong all the way through.

7) Nausicaa: Probably not one of the 10 best films on it's own merits. Though it has great artwork and music, there was too much story to turn into a single film. You can tell it is hacked up. However, it makes my list because this is essentially Japan's "Sleeping Beauty". This movie put Japan at the same level as the best of American animation...... it's also a personal favorite.

8 ) Ratatouille: One of the few truly original films Disney has ever been associated with (though most of the thanks goes to Pixar). A big risk, and great movie. Also some of the most beautiful animation of any of the computer generated films.

9) Fantasia: A work of art in it's own category. I just wish we could see the original uncut again.

10) Shrek: I know most of us are tired of the series by now, but the first one was a very good movie that could be appreciated by a pretty broad audience. It probably deserves to be on the list.... or at least really close.

The following movies were very difficult for me not to include, and if I made the list at a different time, just might be there..

Little Mermaid: primarily for historical significance, in that it marked a comeback by Disney, after years of crap.

Patlabor 2: Great animated move that didn't need to be animated.

Akira: Probably the original movie with any level of cross-over success. Astonishing animation! Why isn't this in my list..... mainly because I didn't think of it at the time, and didn't know what to bump. ^_^;

Finding Nimo: Not my favorite, but a good movie, and it's difficult to deny the appeal. This one might just extend past the generation who originally watched it, which most of the titles on those other lists will not do.

Bambi: Not my favorite Disney, but difficult to argue the quality of the movie.

The explanation cannot be determined.

The Three Laws of Robotics:
1. A robot may not injure a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

It's just really tough to decide! Image

So how are we supposed to judge? By artwork? Story? Innovation? Image

ImageThe Animated Movie that really got me into anime would be End of Evangelion! Before then I lumped Anime together with american animation.

Use your own criteria. This isn't a contest. I am just curious how others would construct a top ten list.

Well here is my list that reflects my opinion.

1. Sleeping Beauty
This one set the bar that Disney never was able to quite match ever again.

2 Spirited Away
Great art and story , winning the Oscar helped open the door for Anime to a whole new audience.

3. Grave of the Fireflys
Possible one of the most powerful stories ever put to film animated or not.

4. Ghost in the Shell
The originality of the story and art has influenced a generation of film makers and show up in many films such as The Matrix.

5. Akira
When this movie was released in theaters it showed what was capable to do with animation. 180 degrees from what most were used to from Disney.

6. An American Tail
Don Bluth put together a great story with memorable characters.

7. Wizards
Ralph Bakshi’s epic animated film.

8. Castle in the Sky
Fabulous art and story.

9. Shrek
Best of the new computer generated animation mainly to the story and humor.

10. Princess Mononoke
Great story and artwork. Last of the great cel based movies.

Well, since I started this question, I might as well put in my two cents.

1. Beauty and the Beast - Broke new ground in digital animation. Was also the first and last animated feature to earn an Oscar nomination.

2. Spirited Away - Not only stunning animation and brilliant storytelling, but also one of the first Miyazaki films to be widely distributed in America.

3. Grave of the Fireflies - There are few live action films that have touched me as much as this. The last thirty minutes rivals only Million Dollar Baby in terms of how gut-wrenching it is to watch.

4. Ratatouille - This is a film that should have gotten an Oscar nomination for Best picture. As it is, Brad Bird had to settle for his second Best Animated Film oscar. I love cooking, and this film shows just how much art goes into great cuisine.

5. South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut - Steven Sondheim sent Trey Parker and Matt stone a letter upon screening this film. He praised them for creating one of the great modern musical films. Yes, the animation is (intentionally) crude. However, I dare you to find more laughs per minute in another animated film.

6. The Nightmare Before Christmas - I am a big fan of Danny Elfman's scores. Just another great story with wonderful music.

7. Lilo and Stitch - This is the one where I will take some grief, I know it. Yes, I loved this movie. I love it because it is one of the few Disney films that does not cater to the nuclear family dynamic, which kids can relate to. It also has a beautifully composed Hawaiian score. I love Hawaii, and this story is truly an island fairy tale.

8. Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Disney, Warner, and Universal all came together and put their greatest characters in the same film! A perfect blend of adult humor and childish antics. The casting of Chris Lloyd was genius.

9. The Iron Giant - Brad Bird's first attempt at going solo. Wonderful voice casting as well as great period backgrounds.

10. Princess Mononoke - An environmental message disguised as action filled love story. Miyazaki is an avowed environmentalist, and he sneaks that message into every film he does. This serves as a lesson to work with nature, and not against it.
Time is but an illusion. Lunch time...doubly so.

I agree that Ghost ItS and Nightmare Before Christmas deserve serious consideration, and either could end up on my list any other day I make it.

I considered this one, but just couldn't do it. The environmental themes are in very many of his movies, but this was actually more weak in this tone than other movies. Nausicaa was a serious warning, while Mononoke seemed to be a more matured message that progress has to happen, and that finding the balance (or at least respecting the past) is what is needed. I felt like the movie showed both sides and was a little sad in that it made it feel that nature losing is inevitable. Anyway, not a criticism of the pick. I thought it was an excellent move, and much more coherent than Nausicaa. For me, it just felt like more of a mature redo. As for as historical significance, I don't know how you weigh Nausicaa being one of the first to this one having a wider audience, and being done better. How do you leave any of these movies off a list?! :( We should really be doing a top 20. ^_^;
