Post by Keropi »

Has anyone ever tried cramming onto a train like this?:

Now I can see where all those adult anime train jokes come from. :D

I like when the train pulls away and you can see all the people that are smashed up against the windows. :D

It would be tough to breathe though. :?

Eep, what happens if you are in the middle of the group when you get to your stop? 8O

Along the same lines, what happens when the doors open again? Do they all fall out?

I was definitely on a few rush-hour commuter trains like that when I was in Japan. There were uniformed men on the platform whose sole job it was to push people onto the train, if they didn't fit. At bit funny, except for the fact that some poor Japanese person's face is being jammed into your armpit for an undisclosed duration. Luckily, I was traveling with someone who is over six feet tall, so at least I was somewhat protected from the crush -- not many Japanese people would want to piss off a gigantic gaijin. :D
But I do vividly recall the day I left. I had my suitcase with me and ended up standing on my suitcase in order for both it and me to successfully fit on the train. :rollin

People, in my limited experience, are pretty nice about letting you OFF the train. After all, they want more space. It's only getting ON the train that things get a bit vicious.

The bus I took back and forth everyday to school in Kyoto would sometimes feel that full :-( You'd think that if the bus were COMPLETELY full, the driver wouldn't stop if a stop wasn't requested, but they always do. Like, full to the point that it HURTS. I wonder how people decide whether they should get on or just wait for the next one >.> My stop was fairly early in the route, so there was always space when I got on, but the schoolgirls usually monopolized the seats. I've been on uncomfortably full trains too :-/ Not an uncommon occurrence when you rely on public transportation, and so does everyone else.

Usually if you repeat "orimasu" (I'm getting off) or "sumimasen~~" over and over, with your body turned sideways (so it's easier to squeeze between people) and one hand in front of you kinda like this

(only with your right hand though)
to part the crowd, you can usually get through ok. Buses, in Kyoto at least, always have one way traffic: you get on in the back and pay when you get off in the front. This also helps a little.

Actually, it's such a problem that, during the morning commute, there is usually a train car that is women only to prevent any "uncomfortable situations" that male passengers might create X|

I've heard of those. All the more reason to have it if the trains are getting so full like that somewhat regularly. I didn't know they got so packed like that.

So what happens to the people who are sitting down? Are they just crammed in sideways on the seats or are a few of them sitting on each others lap?

I was on one of those on my last trip to Japan. We were going to a festival and used the subway for the first time. Of course, everyone was using the subway to go to the same place we were going. We were shoved up against the opposite side doors. Lucky for my friends and I, we were next to a stroller so we didn't feel that cramped. And the ride was only 10 minutes.
Can you hear this fangirl squee?!

I think you'd have to look something like Jun Watarase from Happiness to be able to pull that off. :D
