2010 Year in Review & 2011 Cel/Sketch Resolutions

Post by cutiebunny »

As the year comes to a close, it's time to revive the 5th Annual "Year in Review & Cel/Sketch Resolution" thread.

To celebrate the 5th installment of this yearly tradition, I added a new question. I'm tired of reading about bad news on those news websites and figured that a "best acquisition" question would bring me (and maybe some other members) some momentary cheer. Of course, you don't have to answer that, or any of these questions if you don't want to.

And..on with the questions...

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

(see http://www.anime-beta.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=26770 for quick reference)

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

Not so much to my gallery/collection, but, I think the best thing that has happened to me is getting to know my fellow collectors a lot more. This year, I was able to team up with several other collectors and work together to acquire items that we wanted. Yeah, it stung a little knowing that I wouldn't get everything, but, it was nice being able to get one of several items for (perhaps) a more reasonable price. I'd like to continue this networking into 2011 & expand it even more.

Gallery-wise, similar to last year, I'm still working on animated gifs for all entries on the gallery. It's time consuming, but it's nice to see how your artwork was used without scanning through the episode.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

It grew, and larger than I thought it would. I went into 2010 thinking that, since I intended to spend less money than in 2009, that that would mean that I would also be able to add fewer items. But, thanks to the artists at Anime Expo & a hefty purchase in Japan, I was able to add quite a bit to my collection.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

/hmm

Let's go with Mamoru Yokota's original drawing of Light Yagami from "Death Note". Hawt.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

Two things - exchange rates and forgeries.

I think a lot of US collectors who buy items on Japanese websites are concerned about the dollar/yen exchange rate. It really limits you and makes those 'must have at all cost' items far more painful. When I first started, back in 2003, all of my deputy invoices would come in with exchange rates like 120 yen to the dollar. It used to be that you could easily do a 1 for 1 rate in your head, and then, be pleasantly surprised that, with commission, the real price would be less than the 1 for 1 rate you had estimated. But now, at 79 yen to the dollar, 500 yen really is slightly more than $6. And while I appreciate that some deputy services are cutting their rates to offset the exchange rate, it really hurts when you look at an item and tell yourself that it's not worth the additional $200+ you'll be paying due to poor exchange rates.

Forgeries, though, is a rather new concern for me. I find myself getting away from cels and sketches, and buying more original art. Granted, I'm not trying to acquire artwork from well known artists or artists whose work commands super high prices (Takeshi Takeuchi, for starters...). But, unless I get it personally at conventions from the artist or the item comes with photos/packaging that would indicate its authenticity, there's always that lingering thought in my mind that I could have just bought a copy.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

I will continue to spend less on artwork than I did in, say, 2006 and 2007. I also plan to continue to shift my focus from cels and more towards original artwork.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Yes, I did. I stated that I would spend less money in 2010 than I did in 2009, and, I achieved that. I also wrote that I would purchase more original artwork in 2010, and, I did that as well.

Mission accomplished! 10 Brownie Points for me! :vict

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

Updating my gallery with nearly all of the pictures that I have. Still have some left, but there's not that many. I'll have to scan them someday though.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

That I only felt compelled to buy nine pieces this year. I went from twenty two pieces last year to nine. On the other hand, I saved a lot of money.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

I'd say the Tokimeki Memorial Shiori Christmas cel I got. I had wanted one of those for more than eight years and I finally got one.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

That I don't have much desire to buy anything these days. The thoughts of long term humidity damage to them and getting forgeries severely dampens the mood. :)

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

That I keep saving artwork photos in a timely manner and that I back them up so that I don't lose many during HD crashes.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Yeah, I cleaned up my links. They're much better organized now and I can look them up multiple ways.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

Hayao Miyazaki handwritten art now registered in inventory.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

"A" graduated for my animation art market thesis in a business school listed in the Financial Times top 10 rankings.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

Continue to make people discover the magic of traditionnal animation through press works and free contests.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Sure, got frequent phone call with my bank agent for international money transfert.

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

The Gundam Wing & Transformers G1 sections grew! :) Those, along with one or two other sections are all we really focus on now, so I know both my husband and I are happy that both of these sections now include more artwork.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

The overall size of our collection shrank. We've been working hard at cleaning it out, and have successfully decreased the number of pieces of artwork we own.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

This is a tough question, because we were able to acquire a number of wishlist pieces this year. Most of those reside in the Gundam Wing section for me, with a particularly beautiful shot of Kamui from X/1999 wielding the sword also would make the list. I'm sure my husband would list most of the new G1 Transformers cels as well.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

Not much concerned me this year, regarding collecting. It's still difficult to find cels from the shows I still actively hunt for, but that's OK with me. :)

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

To reduce the size of our collection even further -- ultimately, I'd like to halve it, but that may be an unrealistic expectation. X|

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Yep! :) We indeed bought much less artwork this year than last year & in general in years past. I'm happy about that, and I hope we continue to do the same in 2011.

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.
The best thing? Besides splurging hundreds of dollars on plastic art pieces? xD The best has yet to come since I'm still paying off one of my cels and hopefully it will be delivered next month. It is costing me a fortune but it is definitely worth it.

I'm relatively new here and I have yet to open my gallery. It isn't complete yet and I am embarrassed by how small it is. /swt

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.
Hm... I sold one of my Sleeping Beauty cels for $1651. It is a cel of Briar Rose and Prince Philip being whimsical. I'm surprised that I actually sold it but.. I don't love it enough to keep it, so it is best that it departs from my gallery.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?
A mermaid cel from Disney's Peter Pan.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.
Spending. I need to learn how to save!

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.
Hopefully I can get the Sailor Moon cel of my dreams and have the guts to open my rubberslug gallery to the public!

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

I was able to acquire an entire slew of wishlist CCS items early in the year, thanks to a single gallery owner. *_*

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

All of the Rainbow Brite cels I managed to purchase. I have never seen such nice cels from that series for sale before.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

Sumire and Yuri from Miyuki-chan in Wonderland. So gorgeous!

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

One concern is the same as last year: that the community has shrunk and is less communicative among members, as a whole. My other concern, like many, is the horrific dollar:yen exchange rate.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

Spend less. Spend wisely.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Yep. My resolution from last year (Be more critical of the quality of cels that I buy.) has held true for the majority of my purchases. I was able to acquire many top-notch pieces this year.

goes to copy / paste the answers from last year......

ooops, i did that last year..... and the year before......

oh well, i guess i'll take some time this year :P

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

The best (or worst, depending on how you want to see it) has been to see that from time to time, the BWA still carries wishlist cels that i want.... Unfortunately there must be several other people sharing my thoughts because they cost a lot!!!

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

This year has been the year that i have purchased less number of cels since i keep detailed records. Only 15. But at the same time, the average price per cel that i paid easily doubles the average of any other year.... I spent more or less the same on cels than other year, but 3 of those cels were specially expensive.... and i can blame the BWA for it :P

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

Probably my 1st/2nd purchase of the year, on the January BWA.... I normally don't show my purchases, but this one is entered on the beta awards for this year, outfit category.....

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

The few cels i have purchased this year makes me revive the ghosts of the past about the sources of cels drying up... But you never know, i have seen in the past dry years followed with really good years.... After all it's only needed one person wanting to get rid of their collection to have the market supplied for a while.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

I don't make yearly resolutions. If i like it i buy it (provided that i can afford it of course)

What i do have since many years ago is a very long term resolution regarding the main series i collect. The series is Kimagure Orange Road and the character is Madoka of course :P. The resolutions go like this:

A) Get at least one cel of her from each episode. -> I'm really close to completing this one. I'm only missing a cel from 1 episode. The series has 1 pilot episode, 48 TV episodes, 8 OVAs and 1 movie (There's a 2nd movie that i don't count as i don't like the art.)

B) Get at least one cel of her wearing every outfit she uses in the series. -> This is a really tough one. We are not talking about Card Captor Sakura here but she does really use lots of different outfits, and some of them are only used for brief seconds. I have counted around 130 of them. Of course many are similar with slight variations.... From those 130 i already have around 100, so you can guess how many i have left :P

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Didn't have one, but my long term resolution keeps advancing.... slowly .....

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

A thorough revisitation of my Hyper Police collection as part of my "Quirky Tour" efforts. I was able to identify and screencap every sketch and cel in my galleries, and also give proper credit to the surprisingly diverse team of animators who worked on this series. I felt so proud of this "Quirky Tour" that when it was time to replace it with the year-end review, I simply moved it to the Hyper Police gallery section and kept it live.

At the same time I also went through the art itself and gave it proper long-term archival housing. I'd like to be able to say the same for every corridor of my collection eventually.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

After ten years of collecting, I'd figured that my interests were pretty well set. Then in 2010 I started collecting from three new series. Two of them were CGI productions that I had liked for a long time, but hadn't seen art available on the market within my budget. Then in 2010, the logjam broke. :yay

The third was my first hentai passion, a likeably quirky series called Usagi-chan de Cue!! (roughly, "Bunnykins goes Centerfold!!) It proved to me that interesting scripting, attractive character design, and flying boobs :OMG could indeed coexist in a single series. :D

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

This lovely genga. It's the final image in the Rozen Maiden ED animation. That's a superb piece of drawing, and a moment I'd never ever thought I could manage to own.

Visit my Quirky Review of 2010 for more of my favorite new acquisitions.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

I still feel somewhat disconnected and isolated. Image I feel that what I'm doing connects with many areas of knowledge, and yet somehow I feel that I'm still largely talking to myself and a very few long-suffering friends. I'd like to get out more often, and my cels are suffering from cabin fever too.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

I need to catalog my collection. I began 2 years ago, got sidetracked, and never finished. I still find myself turning up important cels and sketches in unexpected places.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Yes, I did, though perhaps not as avidly as I might have during the most busy times. I also tried to keep an eye on the RS gallery update (the new format makes this easier) and send gallery feedback more often. But I'll renew this resolve for another year.

Thanks again to cutiebunny for keeping this tradition alive!

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

It's grown from being a tiny gallery to being a smallish gallery. As i started collecting in late 2009, this is the first full year i've been a part of this hobby and more than 80% of my collection was purchased this year.
I've picked up lots of nice pieces and learned a lot of information by visiting this forum.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

I ended up collecting production art from a few series i didn't expect and didn't collect production art from some of my favourite anime.
I started collecting with a specific list of series in mind, intending to buy only a few cels and sketches of each, except for my two favourite anime: Card Captor Sakura and Ranma. I didn't actually have any scenes in mind that i wanted to collect and was just focussing on some nice-looking cels of my favourite characters. Card Captor Sakura has proven comparatively easy to collect, as the amount of available production art of the series is huge. Ranma on the other hand presents a problem. The animation in Ranma is not that impressive for the most part and the really nice cels are expensive, which made the collecting-threshold for that series a little too steep for me. I'll probably still buy something from Ranma eventually, but i've given up on collecting any serious amount of pieces from the series.
Other series i intended to collect but failed to are Rurouni Kenshin (too difficult to find), Evangelion (too expensive), Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya (no production art available), Aria (same story) and Touka Gettan (ditto).
Because i wasn't able to collect from some of my favourite anime, i gradually adjusted my strategy and started to collect from other series i like, such as Strawberry Panic, Maria Sama Ga Miteru, Rozen Maiden and Yami to Boushi to hon no tabibito. I noticed that there's a good supply of sketches for these series and really nice pieces from key scenes, which has broadened my collecting horizons and really improved the content of my gallery.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

This is a really hard question, as most of my collection was purchased in 2010. My summer 2010 BWA purchases are definitely among my very favorites, especially my ep.49 Sakura, Sakura colour test cel and Burn Up W OP.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

It's really tempting to spend more than you should. In the past year, i spent considerably more than i had intended to. While i could afford to do so, i still feel i went a little overboard.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

Spend less. Be a little pickier. I'm intending to make a Ruri Hoshino cel wishlist, so i don't get tempted by every nice cel of her that shows up on Yahoo Japan.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Didn't have one.

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

I started collecting from an anime I watched years ago . Made me rewatch and buy cels from Fushigi Yuugi.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

I started collecting more cels from anime I had never seen but though the anime was just amazing.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

I'm really proud of the Esm cel I purchased it cost me a lot but in my opinion it is the perfect profile cel I have ever seen of her.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

What concerns me is that I will always be collecting and that more and more fakes will flood the market.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

My resolution will be to try not to spend too much on cels or try to stop all togather.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Nope still collected.

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

Not much has really changed this year for me, I have been getting a little more feedback about my gallery, mostly enquiries about my Akira cels, which is strange because it's not the strongest part of my collection like NS or Burn Up say. But anyway even though I'm turning folkes down at least it's getting noticed.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

Really for me it's been how rational I've been with my money. There have been things I've wanted including something that's been and gone, which I've actually since really kicked myself for, but I've managed to keep a real lid on the spending this year. I think all in all about £400 has been spent this year and since it used to be easily triple that I think that's good, since I've promised myself that I can't go crazy until I get a better paid job.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

I think my new Iria cel was best for me, I don't often get them because good cels of her cost too much (for me at any rate) but I managed to get her for around $120 so it was all the sweeter a purchase.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

Fakes and scammers in general, usual stuff.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

Keep on saving and not spending too much. Keep it about the same as this years I'm hoping for.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Nope and yes since I didn't do one last year.

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

It's been so slow, I can't really name a best or worst thing that happened to the gallery.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

After lurking on Rubberslug since it started and being a member for 5 years, I finally opened a gallery there. I got worn out from scanning pretty quickly though. Don't know if I will ever get around to putting up the bulk of my gallery. Still who knows? Something is better than nothing.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

I finally found a cel of Amiboshi playing his flute.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

Just how much harder it is to find cels (or other artwork) that interests me. Maybe I have gotten too picky over time, but it is quite frustrating to keep looking and finding so little to get excited about.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

I may have overdone the whole "don't buy on impulse" thing. Maybe I should relax and get a little more impulsive.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

I did not have one last year though I did try to limit my impulse spending. I was overall rather successful with that - maybe too much so.

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

It has been slower this year...but a few wishlists I'd never ever thought to see came up. The good news is that with these requisitions I can go even slower next year. I also manage to find nice artwork at reasonable prices for most series I collect.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

As mentioned above, a few wishlists I can only dream about appeared....and made me much poorer.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

Hmm.... can't decide, there are 2 strong contenders.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

I'm going slow and I don't mind as much if I don't get what I want. I'm still amazed at some of the lovely pieces still available from old series. Actually for some series, the prices have actually dropped as compared to 10 years ago...makes you think if cels are a good investment after all.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

To take good care of my collection...sort, check the bags, put them where they belong....and buy a bigger dry cabinet. Oh and appreciate more of what I have instead of chasing after what I don't have.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?

Yes and no. I've bagged and sorted some of my artwork but the rate of buying exceeds the rate I'm sorting....so I've still got loads to do (sigh).

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.
Oh man, I can't even pick one thing. I'm just shocked at how much my gallery has grown, and what I've managed to get.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.
Definitely has to be my Zorua sketch. I won the lot hoping for Raikou, Entei, and/or Suicune sketches since they were in that movie as well, but while I didn't find any, I fell in love with this Zorua. I never even dreamed I'd see a Pokemon movie 13 sketch lot.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?
Easily my flashback young Hotaru and Hotaru faux-harmony cels.

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.
Collecting such a sought and rare character is really challenging, especially since I still haven't been able to save. Thus I've had to let a lot of great cels go this year. Next year though, since I won't have to worry about a flood of merchandise of my favorite Pokemon, I'll be in a much better place to collect and save.

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.
Trying last year's again, obtain great cels without being stupid, and start saving finally.

6. Did you stay true to your cel/sketch-related resolution posted in 2010?
I wish. XD But I didn't spend too much at least, instead I had to let a lot go.

happy new year, everyone! :cheers

1. The best thing that's happened to your gallery/collection.

in 2009, i finally watched "death note" and got hooked. artwork from this series was my only acquisition in 2010.

2. The most surprising thing that has happened to your gallery/collection.

i saved my money, which surprises me! i also ended up selling a lot of pieces in 2010. my focus is now on quality over quantity.

3. What art piece are you most proud of acquiring in 2010?

i'm very proud to have paired "L" (by Nat R.) with his original background:

http://unicorngallery.rubberslug.com/ga ... esID=37602

4. Thing that concerns you about your collecting experience.

my only concern is that i have less time for this hobby as i get older. :l

5. A cel/sketch-related resolution for 2011.

to continue polishing my collection. hopefully, some wishlist items will pop up for me to purchase. ;)
