I learned two as well, both on electric typewriters and on a computer. What other people do, I don't care. :P I will always use two - it looks better to me.

I also write, and I use hard copies more often than soft. So "looks better" refers to a printed page. The white break helps my eyes start a new sentence, just like punctuation in poetry is so important to divide ideas.

:^^: Yeah. That's just me!

When I am writing papers, I use single unless I am told to type with double space.... (some journal wants us to use some weired fonts and styles..... :? )

The main reason is, like you notice, that I talk too much :P :P my paper tends to be huge..... for some reason......

When I was taking sociology classes when I was an undergraduate, I wrote a couple 200 pages papers.... (and of course a teacher seemed not to read a whole thing :P :P)

I did that in grad school before... in a class where the prof expected 10-20 pages. I wasn't sure what angle to take, so I explored them all. I aced the paper, but then the prof enforced a max page limit... for the first time ever ^^;;;;

Exactly.... Many classes or journals set up the max number of pages.... So this is why I prefer single space :P :P

LMAO you guys! I think he means space once or twice after a period, not double or single space a paper!

Even though, for either, my answer is two. :P My keyboarding teacher in junior high said to space twice after a period (and it's just reflex now) PLUS every professor I've ever had says to double space their papers. It's easier for them to write corrections that way. :x

Just do what the nice teacher says and no one will get hurt. :rollin

Yep, I know that's what the original author meant :-)

Like several others have already mentioned, I learned to double space after
the end of a sentence when learning to type on typewriters and have
continued to do so since then. And at this point, I'll doubt if I'll ever change.

Right now, I just see it like the difference between oral and rectal thermometers:
It's just a matter of taste :P

I'm never going to think of a thermometer the same again... >.>

I've learned to use two spaces from typing class as well as somewhere else... Long long ago... Been using it ever since. I'll look it up in my "rules" book at home (if I can remember).

But I say do whatever your Teacher commands, that way you won't get a lower grade. =P

If you're talking about TYPING -- as in typewriters -- it's two spaces.

However! Since HTML takes the extra space out whether you like it or not, many journals specify single-spacing now. (Because a lot of them publish online). APA Style Manual, for example, specifies single.

Those of us who learned touch typing before the advent of electric typewriters are learning that the find and replace function is really useful. I'll never EVER be able to just put one space :P
Moop wrote:^ And just to clarify, here's a fairly definitive article on the utterly enthralling subject of spacing:

http://www.webword.com/reports/period.html
"Definitive" is whatever the style manual says :) Or... something like Encyclopedia Britannica. Or the Modern Language Association. Or... you know. Some huge publisher. Given that I've never heard of webword, I'm inclined to question its authority until I've seen it reviewed elsewhere...

Lesson from the library expert. Just because it's on the web don't mean squat. :P

(It probably IS definitive, Moop, but checking sources isn't exactly most people's long suit these days :-) Never miss a chance to do a little proselytizing for careful thought...)
