What's the longest you've gone without purchasing artwork?

Post by RalphVboy »

This past weekend while trying to organize the artwork I've acquired over the years, I pinpointed when the last time I purchased artwork was. It was in March of 2008 8O That's not to say I haven't been keeping up with auctions/private sales/etc. over this time (though admittedly not as aggressively as years past :P) , it's just nothing I saw throughout that time compelled me enough to break the bank and spend the cash.

There was a time when I started collecting where I'd always be on the lookout for artwork and purchase at least something every few months or so. Maybe this is something that a majority of new collectors end up going through in the beginning :shrug

Anywho, this question is posed to both new and veteran cel/sketch collector's alike. What's the longest you've gone without purchasing artwork?

I took a 5 year hiatus from collecting but during that time I did buy a piece or two so 3 years.

But now that I am actively collecting again, 4 months.

16 years.

From 0-16 years old, I purchased no artwork. From 16-29 years old I haven't taken a break. I work hard. I pay bills. And the remainder has ALWAYS gone on cels. It's my treat

Wow, I sound really sad :o

The longest I've gone w/o purchasing artwork since I began consciously collecting is about 4 months. Nothing grand.

Since I started cel collecting, I think I took about a 6 month hiatus between cels last year. But, that was because I was busy paying off for that one. :-)

Mine goes something like this:

1. April 11 1997-Sept 15 1997 ---------- (157 days)
2. Aug 10, 2001-Dec 26 2001 ----------- (138 days)
3. Sept 17 1997-Jan 6 1998 ------------- (111 days)
4. July 19 2009-Oct 11 2009 ------------ (84 days)
5. Feb 6 2001-late Apr/early May 2001 (??83 days)
6. Apr 29, 1999-Jul 16 1999 ------------- (78 days)
7. Feb 9 1999-Apr 22 1999 -------------- (71 days)
8. Oct 14, 2000-Dec 20 2000 ------------ (67 days)
9. Aug 10 2000-Oct 14, 2000 ------------ (65 days)
10. Apr 13 2008-Jun 7 2008 ------------- (55 days)
11. Dec 9 2008-Feb 1 2009 -------------- (54 days)
12. Apr 2 2009-May 24 2009 ------------ (52 days)
13. Dec 27 2003-Feb 14 2004 ----------- (49 days)
14. June 2001-July/Aug 2001 ------------ (??45 days)
15. Sept 2004-Oct 25 2004 -------------- ????????

The first one (the 157 day) doesn't really count because it was the space of time between me buying my first cel and my second. I hadn't really gotten into cel collecting at that point.

The 138 days break was more understandable because that was back when I grew tired of collecting the more mainstream cel shows and decided to switch over to collecting ren'ai game anime cels instead. I had just gotten into ren'ai gaming and ren'ai game anime weren't very popular at the time so it gave me a chance to collect something that was easier for me to get (less frustrating, but of more interest to me).

Not surprising that nearly all of my biggest layoffs came:

1. Very early before I had fully gotten into cel collecting.

2. In 1999 when my spare cash was running low and I had to choose what I bought more sparingly.

3. In 2001 when I was growing tired of collecting the cel shows I was collecting.

4. In 2000, which was a combination of #2 and #3

5. In 2008 and 2009, when I was get less excited about collecting sketches because the old quality layouts, douga and genga from new shows that I like were not coming out anymore. Very rough roughs began to dominate. Bleh.

Why am I not surprised you would have an answer that detailed going back over a decade, Keropi. :D

I'm guessing mine would be about 3 months a few years back. Seems like I always find something or someone puts up a sale I can't resist. X|

Bejesus Terrance! O_O
Your tabs are always amazing and precise as usual.
I bet your checkbook is all neat and balanced.. stop it!
Your making the rest of us look bad :P
*grumble grumble*
lol :D

For me the longest I've been w/o buying a painted or paper
beauty has been 1 yr.
More to do w/ being broke and r/l messes than anything.
Though I havent bought something art related in
3 months.. who knows for how long. So far no cold turkey
symptoms. :^^:

I didn't buy any artwork for an entire year in 2007-8.

Heh, that would depend on your definition of ‘artwork.’

I’ve possibly gone as long as 2 years without buying a new cel….

…But I filled the void by buying conventional art like oil paintings and woodblock prints, etc.

So I’d say 1-2 years without buying anime art. But only a few months at most without buying ‘artwork.’

Hmm... this is a rather tough question for me, since I'm always looking, but I don't always find things ;). I'd say I've gone probably a few months at the most since I started collecting back in 2001. But that's just a guess X| .

Hey Ralphy

The longest I've gone without purchasing cels/sketches was 1 year.
But during that year I acquired a couple fanarts.
